Christian Hardmeier, 2014 EAMT Best Thesis Awardee
Five PhD theses were received as candidates to the 2014 edition of the EAMT Best Thesis Award, and all five were eligible. A panel of EAMT members (Kepa Sarasola, Antonio Toral, Qun Liu, Francis Tyers, François Yvon, Lucia Specia, and Mikel L. Forcada, EAMT secretary) was assembled to review the theses. The panel carefully considered how challenging the problem tackled in each thesis was, how relevant the results are for machine translation as a field, and what was the strength of their impact in terms of scientific publications. This was a very competitive edition, what made it particularly hard to select a winner. After a final deliberation, the panel has decided to grant the 2014 edition of the EAMT Best Thesis Award to Christian Hardmeier's thesis "Discourse in Statistical Machine Translation" (Uppsala University, Sweden, supervised by Joakim Nivre and Jörg Tiedemann).
Dr. Hardmeier will receive a prize of €500, together with a suitably-inscribed certificate. In addition, Dr Hardmeier has been invited to present a summary of the thesis at the Annual Conference of the EAMT (http://www.eamt2015.org) which will take place in Antalya, Turkey, May 11-13, 2015. In order to facilitate this, the EAMT will waive the winner's registration costs, and will make available a travel bursary of €200.
